Who is Jen Psaki?
Making her introduction to the world with a rare Inauguration Day appearance, new White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki (SOCK-eee) vowed to “share the truth, even when it’s hard to hear.”
After serving in communications roles for Sen. John Kerry and Rep. Joe Crowley, D-N.Y., the Connecticut native was President Obama’s traveling press secretary during both elections and joined the Obama White House as Deputy White House Communication Director, managing the government’s response to the financial crisis, and later ascending to Communication Director. In this role, she was the first to deliver enhanced focus to online and nontraditional media outlets.
In addition, Psaki was a State Department spokeswoman from 2013 to 2015, where she was applauded for her ability to deliver dense policy briefings with ease during daily press briefings. While it reportedly took some convincing to return to politics, she joined the new administration as press secretary during President Biden’s transition. She will lead the White House’s first-ever all-female senior communications team.
Before returning to the White House, Psaki was a Carnegie Endowment for International Peace scholar and CNN contributor.
A graduate of the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virg., Psaki is married to Democratic political aide Gregory Mecher and is the “mom of two humans under five,” according to her Twitter handle, @jrpsaki.
