Uber and Revel Team Up to Enhance EV Charging Infrastructure in NYC for Zero-Emission Future
Uber Technologies Inc. (UBER) has teamed up with electric vehicle (EV) startup Revel Transit Inc. to expand the availability of charging stations in New York, aiming for a zero-emission ride-hail fleet in the US by 2030. This move aligns with Uber’s sustainability goals and upcoming New York City regulations requiring ride-hail services to operate only zero-emission or wheelchair-accessible vehicles within six years.
Revel plans to install up to 500 chargers in New York City and the Bay Area by 2025, enhancing charging options in underserved areas like the Bronx and Queens. The partnership, which guarantees usage by Uber drivers, is seen as a model for expansion into other major cities, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Boston.
The collaboration will offer exclusive charging discounts to Uber drivers and contribute to Uber’s commitment of $800 million to aid drivers in transitioning to EVs. Despite current low EV usage rates among Uber drivers in North America, the company is optimistic about increasing these figures, especially with improved charging infrastructure and incentives for drivers to switch to EVs.
Uber’s efforts also include advocating for more supportive policies and infrastructure investments from policymakers and businesses to meet its zero-emission goals. Additionally, Uber aims to make EV adoption more economical for its drivers, focusing on affordable vehicle access and charging solutions as part of its broader strategy to achieve global emission-free operations by 2040.
