Flight Attendants Prepare for Takeoff: Airlines Scheduled to Announce Q2 Earnings
Today is Flight Attendant Safety Professionals’ Day which coincidentally happens to fall on the same day United Airlines (UAL) announces earnings after-market close. Yes, we are serious and don’t call us Shirley. In 1990, President George Bush declared today as “a holiday to recognize the important role flight attendants play in enhancing the safety and convenience of our nation’s air transportation system.” While we’d much rather be flying first class to anywhere with a glass of bubbly in hand than be at the office today, discussing Q2 airlines earnings is without a doubt the second-best option.
Last week Delta Airlines (DAL) kicked off earnings for the group posting record quarterly earnings that beat consensus estimates on Q2 EPS and revenues and exceeded Q3 and FY2023 guidance. Glen Hauenstein, Delta President cited, “We delivered record revenue in the June quarter, with total revenues 19% higher than the June quarter of 2022…Robust demand is continuing into the September quarter where we expect total revenue to be similar to the June quarter, up 11% to 14% compared to the September quarter 2022 on capacity that is 16% higher.” DAL is up about 45% year-to-date against the S&P (~19% YTD).
Today, investors have now increased their anticipation as they look to United Airlines to “buzz the tower next.” After-market today, UAL will either land “Goose” status or a goose egg. However, with the overly positive and optimistic comments from Delta, it’s probable the stock will be flying higher on tomorrows open. Next on the runway is American Airlines (AAL) who will announce tomorrow followed by Spirit Airlines (SAVE) next Wednesday and Southwest Airlines (LUV) next Thursday.
