Sunrun Partners with Orange and Rockland to Get New York’s Largest Residential Power Plant on the Grid

Sunrun (RUN), the leading provider of clean energy subscription services in the U.S., and Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc., a subsidiary of Consolidated Edison, Inc. (ED), one of the nation’s largest investor-owned energy companies, have successfully launched New York’s largest residential power plant. This innovative project utilizes over 300 solar-plus-storage systems, which provided stored solar energy during peak electricity demand events this summer to help stabilize the electric grid.

The Sunrun-managed power plant, initiated by O&R and approved by the New York State Public Service Commission as a demonstration project, supports New York’s transition to clean, reliable energy. It also helps the state achieve its ambitious storage and electrification goals. In addition, the solar-plus-storage systems offer backup power to participating customers’ homes.

“This marks a significant step toward fortifying New York’s energy grid by utilizing innovative solutions to create a more affordable and reliable power delivery system. We’re thrilled to see New Yorkers benefit from sharing stored solar energy, and we believe this partnership with Orange and Rockland will set an example for the rest of the state,” said Mary Powell, CEO of Sunrun.

With over 1 million customers and 116,000 installed storage systems, Sunrun is the nation’s largest developer of residential clean energy solutions. The company accounts for nearly half of all new home battery installations in the U.S. and operates more than a dozen power plants across the country, including the largest single-owner virtual power plant in the nation.
