Disney’s Disneyland theme park entertainers – those who bring beloved characters like Mickey, Donald, and Goofy to life – are considering joining forces with the Actors’ Equity Association. This labor union is dedicated to representing individuals who work in live theatrical performances.
The union made a statement on Tuesday, explaining it would request voluntary acknowledgement from Disney Resort Entertainment once a majority of the workers have signed union authorization cards,
should Disney refuse to recognize the union, Equity has pledged to file these cards with the National Labor Relations Board.
Last November, an effort was made by 10 of Walt Disney’s animation workers to form a union and request representation from the Animation Guild, with aims of better pay and benefits.
Disney was one of the major media corporations impacted by the 118-day SAG-AFTRA strike last year, as performers demanded higher wages and safety measures against the use of artificial intelligence.
“Disney’s employees are deeply committed to, and actively support, the Walt Disney Company and its values. It’s only fair they expect ‘the happiest place on earth’ to compensate them adequately and prioritize their wellbeing,” commented Kate Shindle, president of Actors’ Equity Association.
Following a vote in favor of unionizing, Disney will have to comply with federal law and start negotiating a contract with Equity’s representatives. The negotiation team will also include hosts, trainers, and other roles that support the cast members.
The Actors’ Equity Association has a solid representation of over 51,000 professional actors and stage managers.
